Silver medalist at the World Athletics Championships Ese Brume, has made a promising start to the Budapest 2023 edition as she secured a spot in the long jump final, News About Nigeria reports.
Brume’s performance is said to have added a glimmer of hope for Team Nigeria in the competition. Competing in Group A of the qualification round, Brume finished in 4th place with a jump of 6.72 meters.
While this is a positive outcome, she will need to further improve her performance to secure a podium finish in the final scheduled for Sunday at 11:56 am.
Unfortunately, Ruth Usoro, the second Nigerian woman’s long jumper, did not advance. Usoro finished 8th in Group B with a jump of 6.60 meters.
In other events, the performance of Team Nigeria was mixed. Shot Putter Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, a finalist in the last two editions of the Championships, faced a disappointing start with a “no throw” in the opening round.
He managed to throw 20.41 meters in the second round and 20.68 meters in the third round but did not progress in the competition.
Additionally, the 4x400m mixed relay team, consisting of Dubem Nwachukwu, Patience Okon George, Nathaniel Ezekiel, and Imaobong Nse Uko, finished sixth in the second semifinal heat with a personal season’s best time of 3:14.38. However, they were unable to advance to the final.
It is also worth noting that the team had made it to the final in the previous year’s Championships in Oregon but was unable to replicate that success in Budapest.
