Super Falcons’ coach Randy Waldrum has departed for the United States with seven Falconets after World exit, News About Nigeria reports.
Following Nigeria’s elimination from the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, Waldrum has left the team’s camp along with some of his players,
The decision comes amidst concerns about unpaid allowances and bonuses for both the coach and the players, adding to the recent criticisms of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) regarding the team’s preparation for the World Cup.
Prompt News reported that Waldrum, along with several players, left the team’s hotel in Brisbane, Australia, just hours after their defeat to England.
The departure was relatively discreet, with the coach departing early in the morning, and it was noted that many of the players and backroom staff were still asleep when he left.
Among the players who accompanied Waldrum on the trip back to the United States were Deborah Abiodun, Ifeoma Onumonu, Jennifer Echegini, Esther Okoronkwo, Michelle Alozie, Toni Payne, and Yewande Balogun.
The remaining players and additional members of the backroom staff were expected to begin their departure for Nigeria shortly after.
Waldrum, despite the reported “unfriendly relationship” with the NFF, has expressed his willingness to continue as the head coach of the Super Falcons, although concerns about outstanding emoluments have continued to linger.
The NFF has faced criticism over the handling of the team’s preparation and the backlog of unpaid allowances and bonuses.
Waldrum’s departure from the team with a few other players has raised reactions and highlights the need for the NFF to address the lingering issue of players’ unpaid allowances and bonuses.
