Despite exiting from the FIFA Womens World Cup, prominent Nigerian politicians have continued the Super Falcons for putting up a commendable performance against the European champions England.
News About Nigeria recalls that Nigerian Super Falcons despite being the underdogs in the round of 16 fixtures of the FIFA World Cup, held the European giants to a goalless draw for 120 minutes. However, the Nigerian side failed to find the back of the net on two occasions, crashing out 4-2 on penalties.
However, commending the Super Falcons for putting up a great fight against one of the World Cup favorites, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party at the 2023 presidential election Atiku Abubakar said in a tweet that the Super Falcons have every reason to hold their head high despite crashing out of the tournament.
“We may have lost to England in a penalty shootout, but the @NGSuper_Falcons have every reason to hold their heads high. I still have no regrets about skipping my breakfast for this game. #ENGNGR #FIFAWWC -AA,” Atiku wrote.
On his part, former Kaduna senator, Shehu Sani urged the Nigerian sports authorities to do more to motivate players.
“We are proud of the performance of the Super Falcons. Our sports administrators should do more to motivate our players,” Mr Sani wrote.
Media personality Ebuka Obi Uchendu revealed that he was proud of the performance that the Super Falcons put up against the European giants.
“Great job @NGSuper_Falcons. Brilliant performance against all odds. Super proud!!!” he wrote.
Nigeria’s elimination from the competition severely lessens Africa’s prospects of winning the first-ever Women’s World Cup trophy.
Morocco is the only country representing the continent at the women’s football tournament as South Africa was eliminated from the competition after losing to the Netherlands 2-0.
