Manchester United’s star Marcus Rashford has set his sights on breaking Wayne Rooney‘s all-time goal-scoring record for the club, News About Nigeria understands.
After committing his future to Manchester United with a new five-year deal, Rashford has been determined to chase Rooney’s record of 253 goals.
With 123 goals in 359 appearances for the club, Rashford has established himself as one of United’s key players.
Talking to the Overlap in partnership with Sky Bet, Rashford shared that Rooney himself has encouraged him to pursue the record.
“Hopefully, I will break Wayne Rooney’s all-time United goal record. You never know what’s going to happen, but I’m all about scoring goals and trying to make assists. There’s a chance that it can happen,” Rashford said.
Having signed his new contract after his best goalscoring season for Manchester United, where he scored 30 goals in 56 appearances during the 2022-23 campaign, Rashford believes he can achieve even more.
United boss Erik Ten Hag set him the challenge of scoring 40 goals in the upcoming season, a target Rashford believes he can reach if he remains injury-free.
“Before last season, I always aimed for 20 goals – a good benchmark for a winger. But this season, I’ve hit 30 – we have to try and push it now,” Rashford stated. “If I can keep that side of it under wraps, I feel like I can go on and get 35 or 40.”
Rashford praised Ten Hag’s winning mentality, which has transformed the team’s fortunes since his arrival last season.
“At the minute, we’ve got a manager that’s fully dedicated to winning at all costs, and he wants us to be as best as we can individually and as best as we can be as a team.”
While Rashford dreams of lifting the Premier League trophy with his boyhood club, he acknowledges that they still have work to do to bridge the gap with rivals Manchester City.
However, he believes that with Ten Hag’s guidance, Manchester United can take the necessary steps to challenge for major honors.
