Officials from the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS) fought about who would confine the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, at the Federal High Court in Lagos.
According to News About Nigeria, the DSS also tried to re-arrest the former CBN head despite a court decision releasing him on bail for the sum of N20 million.
The Federal Ministry of Justice charged Emefiele with illegal possession of weapons and ammunition, but he was released on bail in the amount of N20 million.
A fight broke out between DSS and NCS agents who were battling to take custody of the CBN governor as his lawyers worked to improve his bail terms.
The correctional service brought dogs into the courtroom, and two Hilux vehicles owned by the two government agencies were parked close to the court’s entrance.
According to sources, despite the court’s decision to grant Emefiele bail, DSS agents were seeking to rearrest him.
Both agencies engaged in a long struggle until the DSS agents finally relented and allowed the NCS to take possession of Emefiele.
Emefiele has not yet left the courthouse. He was supposed to be transferred to the NCS headquarters in Kirikiri, where he will stay until his bail requirements are satisfied.
According to reports, the DSS has arrested Mr. Tunde Kuye, the officer in charge (OC) of the Ikoyi Prisons, as a result of the fight, and he will remain in custody until further decisions are made over him.
