Chukwuemeka Nwachukwu, a 42-year-old man, appeared before an Ojo Magistrate Court in Lagos on Friday, facing charges of fraud and stealing after allegedly stealing one million naira from a cleric.
News About Nigeria reports that Nwachukwu pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge brought against him as he stood trial before Magistrate D.S. Odukoya.
According to the prosecutor, Inspector Esther Adesulu, the defendant committed the offence on November 8, 2022, in the Ilogbo area of Ojo, Lagos State.
Adesulu alleged that Nwachukwu obtained one million naira from Pastor Oliver Ogbuagu under false pretences, promising to use the funds to purchase a Volkswagen T4 bus for the pastor.
However, the defendant allegedly never purchased the bus and instead misappropriated the money for personal use.
The prosecutor cited that Nwachukwu’s actions violated the provisions of sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Magistrate Odukoya granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000, requiring two sureties to provide the same amount. The case was adjourned until October 10 for trial.
Meanwhile, Shoola Segun, a 30-year-old man, was arraigned before an Ojo Magistrate Court in Lagos on Friday for allegedly assaulting Kamorudeen Ladi and causing him to lose consciousness.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of assault and breach of peace. The prosecutor stated that the incident occurred on July 1 at the First Gate Bus Stop in the Iba area of Ojo, Lagos State.
It was alleged that a disagreement between the defendant and Ladi escalated, leading Segun to punch Ladi multiple times, causing him to bleed from his left ear.
The defendant was also accused of behaving in a manner that could breach public peace. The case was adjourned until July 27 for trial, and the defendant was granted bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
