Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar has been placed in intensive care in Croatia after suffering a brain hemorrhage, News About Nigeria understands.
This was disclosed in a Twitter statement by the Dutch club Ajax, where he recently resigned as their director.
The former goalkeeper is said to have traveled on holiday on the Croatian island of Hvar where he was reported to have fallen ill at a restaurant, with complications leading to bleeding around his brain.
Meanwhile, the Twitter statement confirmed that he has since been transported to the nearby coastal town of Split on the mainland, where he is receiving adequate medical attention and is reportedly in stable condition.
It read, “On Friday, Edwin van der Sar has had a bleeding around his brain.
“He’s currently in hospital in the intensive care unit and is in a stable condition.
“Once there is more concrete information, an update will follow.
“Everyone at Ajax wishes Edwin a speedy recovery. We’re thinking of you,” it added.
Edwin van der Sar, 52, spent a remarkable six years with Manchester United before his eventual move from the English club in 2011.
During his stint in England, he was considered the best Premier League goalkeeper for several seasons and helped United win the Premier League four times.
He also won the UEFA Champions League with Man United in the 2007/08 season and this remains the club’s last till date.
He was most recently the chief executive of AFC Ajax, with whom he began his senior playing career in the early 1990s.
The former Netherlands international is considered to be a member of the club’s golden generation and was part of the Ajax team that won the UEFA Champions League in 1995.
