New Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola expressed his determination to compete for the English Premier League title as an underdog, News About Nigeria reports.
Bournemouth, which finished in the bottom half of the league table last season, occupying the 15th spot, has faced difficulties in being competitive in the English top flight for several decades and has been unable to secure a top-four finish.
In a statement released by the club’s new manager on Wednesday, Andoni Iraola pledged to lead the team in a strong pursuit of the prestigious title, last claimed by Manchester City. He emphasized the importance of earning respect from the league as underdogs.
Iraola drew similarities between Bournemouth and his experience in Spain, stating, “It is quite similar because of the stadium not being so big or the club not having the same historical stature. However, we must use this to our advantage. I have become accustomed to this situation in Spain with Rayo and Mirandes.”
Expressing his enthusiasm for the opportunity to manage in the Premier League, Iraola regarded it as the best league in the world. He mentioned his familiarity with the club and expressed confidence in his decision after encountering new faces and connecting with new individuals associated with Bournemouth. He hoped to meet the expectations of the role.
Regarding his preferred style of play, Iraola stated, “I don’t like the game to be overly controlled.” He stressed an attacking approach, aiming to initiate quick attacks, open up the game, create numerous chances, and deliver crosses.
While acknowledging the potential challenges in defense, he expressed confidence in the team’s defensive capabilities and their readiness to handle such situations.
Iraola was appointed as Gary O’Neil’s successor at the Vitality Stadium last month, underscoring Bournemouth’s ambition to improve and compete at the highest level.
