Anthony Joshua vs Dillian Whyte rematch has been officially confirmed, as bitter rivals are set to meet again on August 12, News About Nigeria reports.
After a month of negotiations, the two heavyweight champions have finally reached an agreement on the terms of the fight, putting an end to the controversy surrounding it.
Joshua earlier this week threatened to consider his other options after Whyte signed the contract in part, leaving out the PPV segment of the contract. However, all issues seem to have been resolved between the two British rivals who have now been confirmed to square out at the London O2 arena.
In a statement, Matchroom Sport Chairman and Anthony Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, expressed his astonishment that the fight was indeed happening, acknowledging the unyielding rivalry between the two fighters.
He said, “I can’t quite believe this fight is happening and there was absolutely no stopping either man,”
“The rivalry runs deep and there is something about these two where they will never back down from each other.
“At times it may have looked like a game of bluff but now we are set and with everything that’s on the line this is an absolute must win for both.
“Just like the first time at The O2, get ready for fireworks on August 12 and a huge night of boxing live on DAZN.”
Joshua, 33 years old, is returning to the ring after a defeat to Oleksandr Usyk. In April, he made a strong comeback with a unanimous decision victory over Jermaine Franklin, whom Whyte had also defeated in November.
Looking ahead, Joshua has plans to travel to Saudi Arabia in December or January for a lucrative showdown against Deontay Wilder. Talks for that fight are already at an advanced stage, with Eddie Hearn stating that a deal in principle has been virtually agreed upon.
However, before the potential clash with Wilder, Joshua must first face Whyte on August 12 to prepare himself for the impending challenge.
