Nigeria’s female national team has arrived in Australia for the 2023 Women’s World Cup (WWC), News About Nigeria confirms.

The girls reportedly left the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Sunday for Melbourne in Australia. Their arrival was confirmed by the team’s defender Glory Ogbonna on her Twitter handle. “Glory to God for a safe landing,” she wrote.

The 11-time African champions will have a 15-day camping and friendly matches before their first game on the 21st against Canada at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium.

Meanwhile, former Nigerian goalkeeper, Dosu Joseph has expressed his optimism on the chances of the Super Falcons to emerge victorious in the tournament.

He revealed this in a chat with Completesports, stating that the girls are capable of pulling an upset and should not be underrated.

“I am very optimistic the Super Falcons can make Nigeria proud at the 2023 Women’s World Cup because they are not new to the terrain.

“We have players who are playing at the top level of football around the globe, and they are determined to rewrite history which I am very sure they can achieve.

“Any proponent that underrates the Super Falcons will be doing that at their own peril,” he added.

Nigeria is pitched in group B alongside hosts Australia, Canada and the Republic of Ireland.

The tournament will take center stage on July 20 and will run for one month, with the final slated for August 20, 2023

The Super Falcons remain the only African team to take part in all FIFA Women’s World Cups since its inception in China in 1991. They currently hold the record for the highest number of AFCON titles (11).
