A 32-year-old bus conductor, identified as Benjamin Joseph, has been handed a three-month prison sentence by a Jos Magistrates’ Court for assaulting a police officer.
News About Nigeria reports that the conviction and subsequent sentencing took place on Tuesday, June 4, and the defendant has been sent to a correctional facility.
The court proceedings were initiated after the police officer reported the assault, which occurred on June 9, at the “C” Division Police Station.
According to the prosecutor, Inspector Ibrahim Gokwat, the convict attacked the police officer on duty when the officer attempted to prevent him from causing traffic obstruction with his vehicle.
The prosecutor cited that the offense is punishable under the Plateau State Penal Code Law.
During the court session, Benjamin Joseph pleaded guilty to the charge brought against him. Magistrate Shawomi Bokkos, after a summary trial, promptly delivered the verdict and sentenced him to three months in prison without the option of a fine.
The magistrate emphasized that the punishment should serve as a deterrent to potential offenders.
In a separate incident, an 18-year-old student named Abubakar Adam was recently sentenced to nine months in jail for stealing a mobile phone. The judgment was issued by an Area Court in Jos, Plateau State, on Wednesday, June 21.
Adam was found guilty of stealing a Samsung phone valued at N85,000 from the complainant, Habizu Hassan. The stolen phone was allegedly sold to Abdullahi Gambo for N13,000.
Prosecutor Ibrahim Gokwat presented the case, which led to Adam’s conviction after he pleaded guilty during the summary trial.
However, the presiding Judge, Shawomi Bokkos, provided the defendant with an option to pay a fine of N10,000 in lieu of the prison term. Additionally, the court ordered Adam to compensate the complainant with the sum of N100,000.
The judge emphasized that the judgment should serve as a deterrent to potential offenders.
