Former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson has expressed doubts over the signing of Christopher Nkunku recently announced by the club, News About Nigeria reports.

Chelsea on Tuesday officially announced the 25-year-old RB Leipzig forward who was earlier signed in October 2022 on a pre-contract agreement that kept him in Germany throughout the 2022/23 season.

Since joining RB Leipzig in 2019, Nkunku has been a delight to watch, with his creative style of play bringing a series of victories for the club.

He is also known for his versatility playing different roles in the attacking front.

“The French international who was contracted by Chelsea for €60 million is arguably one of Europe’s best strikers in two straight seasons, scoring 35 goals in all competitions during the 2021/22 campaign.”

He continued his form in the 2022/23 season, netting 23 times to help Leipzig secure a third-place finish in the German Bundesliga, while he retained the DFB-Pokal.

While Chelsea have called for his creativity in their forward, especially in front of the opponent’s post, former blues player has expressed his lack of excitement.

Johnson said, “I think Christopher Nkunku looks like a really good player; however, we’ve seen players come to Chelsea and not look the same.”

“Nkunku has all the attributes to be a powerhouse, if he can carry his form into the Premier League, then that’s a fantastic signing,” he said.

In his conversation with Lord Ping, Johnson highlighted Chelsea’s history of attacking flops, which makes him wary, despite acknowledging Nkunku’s talent. He stated, “Many players who were performing well in their various clubs came to Chelsea and became a shadow of themselves.”

In summary, former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson has expressed doubts over the signing of Christopher Nkunku, citing Chelsea’s history of underperforming attacking players. However, he believes that Nkunku has the potential to be a powerhouse and considers it a fantastic signing if he can replicate his form in the Premier League.
