Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State has given his approval for the release of 80 prisoners who are currently held in different correctional facilities across the state, News About Nigeria reports.

This decision comes as part of the commemoration of Democracy Day in 2023.

In a statement issued by Abubakar Usman, the Secretary to the State Government, it was stated that the inmates were selected for release based on specific criteria such as advanced age, poor health conditions, and exemplary conduct during their time in prison.

The governor’s decision to release these individuals aligns with the constitutional provision of the prerogative of mercy, which grants the governor the authority to exercise clemency.

Usman emphasized that it is now incumbent upon the released inmates to seize this opportunity and engage in productive activities while avoiding any behavior that could potentially lead them back to incarceration.

He also advised them to abide by the law and pursue lawful endeavors by taking advantage of various empowerment initiatives that are available to them.

Furthermore, Governor Umaru Bago has also authorized the immediate payment of fines owed by the released inmates, facilitating their reintegration into society and reunion with their families.

This gesture aims to alleviate the financial burden that may hinder their successful reentry into the community.

The governor urged the citizens of Niger State to renew their dedication to strengthening democratic institutions and to embrace values such as tolerance, patriotism, and discipline.

By granting the release of these inmates, Governor Umaru Bago acknowledges the importance of providing a second chance to individuals who have demonstrated good conduct and face challenges such as old age or poor health.
