Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello has escaped assassination, News About Nigeria has learnt.

A group of individuals believed to be supporters of Alh. Muritala Yakubu Ajaka, blocked and assaulted the governor’s convoy, on Saturday.

The incident occurred around 12:30 in the vicinity of the Naval Base, a few kilometers from Lokoja. Many people sustained injuries as a result of the attack.

Kingsley Femi Fanwo, the Commissioner for Information and Communications in the state, issued a statement providing details of the incident.

According to the statement, as Governor Bello’s convoy approached, the convoy of Muritala Yakubu Ajaka obstructed the road, and Ajaka’s armed thugs began firing at the Governor’s convoy.

The statement further revealed that a Tundra vehicle, adorned with the logo of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and SDP flags, also obstructed the Governor’s vehicle.

The individuals inside the Tundra vehicle, which had SDP branding, carried firearms such as rifles and shotguns.

Fortunately, the Governor emerged from the scene unharmed, and there was no reason for alarm as he remains in good spirits.

Some security aides and other staff accompanying the Governor sustained various degrees of injuries and have been promptly taken to medical facilities for treatment.

The statement assured the people of Kogi State that security agents are in complete control and are working to apprehend the hoodlums responsible for the attack.

The State Government said it is determined to uphold law and order, ensuring that the attackers face the consequences of their actions through the judicial process.

Governor Bello emphasized that no member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) should engage in any form of retaliatory attack.

He warned that any acts of insecurity from any quarter will be met with severe penalties.
