After a remarkable 11-year tenure, Edwin Van Der Sar, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ajax, has decided to step down from his position, News About Nigeria reports.
In a statement released by the club on Tuesday, it was revealed that Van Der Sar would be transferring his responsibilities to his colleagues on the club’s Board of Directors.
Despite being asked by the supervisory Board to remain in his position until August 1, to facilitate a smooth transition of both national and international matters, Van Der Sar has chosen to adhere to his original decision.
“We expressed our desire for Edwin to stay, but he has made his decision, and we must respect that. It is important to note that the previous season does not define his entire tenure as the head of Ajax.
“Throughout his leadership, the club has experienced tremendous success, and significant growth, and has gained international recognition. The remaining members of the board will assume his responsibilities,” stated Pier Eringa, Chairman of the Supervisory Board.
Edwin Van Der Sar himself acknowledged that the past 11 years have brought both victories and challenges during his time at the club.
However, he believes that the time has come for him to step aside. He expressed his gratitude to all those who have supported him during his tenure as the Chief Executive Officer and mentioned that it is now time for him to rest and pursue other endeavors.
“After nearly eleven years on the board, I feel that my journey has come to an end. We have shared incredible moments together, but it has also been an immensely challenging period.
“I am deeply grateful for the people I have met and worked with during my second career at Ajax, as well as for our collective achievements and experiences.
“I feel the need to create some distance, find some rest, and explore other opportunities. I do not feel it would be appropriate to make decisions regarding the future of this fantastic club in the upcoming period. Thus, I have decided to resign,” added Edwin Van Der Sar.
Edwin Van Der Sar, 53, initially joined Ajax’s Board of Directors in November 2012, serving as the Director of Marketing. He later assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer in November 2016.
