The Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council (LP PCC) has blamed the judiciary for the leadership crisis in the party following the 2023 general elections, News About Nigeria reports.
Akin Osuntokun, the Director General of LP PCC, expressed his disappointment in a recent court ruling that ordered the LP National Chairman, Julius Abure, and other executive members to stop parading themselves as national officers of the party.
The ruling was made by Justice Muazu of the Federal High Court in Abuja on April 5.
Speaking in an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Osuntokun said that the judge’s decision was the root cause of the current leadership tussle in the party.
He maintained that the LP has no leadership crisis other than the one created by the judiciary, adding that Abure remains the leader of the party.
Osuntokun argued that the judge had the option of allowing the chairman of the party to remain in his position and go on with the case, rather than sacking him and setting the party up for a crisis.
He expressed concerns about the possibility of judges making judgments based on frivolous complaints from party members and urged them to take a more logical position on matters brought before them.
Meanwhile, the LP leadership crisis has continued to deepen as different factions lay claim to the party leadership.
Bashiru Lamidi Apapa, the Deputy National Chairman of the party (South), declared himself the acting Chairman of the party and took over the party leadership after the court judgement.
However, a State High Court sitting in Benin, on April 6, restrained the LP and all its members from suspending Abure and other national officers until the determination of the motion on notice.
The LP PCC has called on all stakeholders and party faithful to remain calm and allow the party to resolve the crisis internally.
The party leadership has promised to engage all members and stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the crisis and ensure that the party emerges stronger.
