The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), and a number of All Progressives Congress (APC) governors met on Monday ahead of the Supreme Court’s hearing on the Central Bank of Nigeria‘s (CBN) Naira swap policy.
The CBN has been ordered not to implement the February 10 deadline for the use of old N200, N500, and N1,000 notes, but has thus far refused to comply with the order, News About Nigeria reports.
The meeting at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja saw Malami and Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the party’s national chairman, hold a closed-door session. A number of governors, including Atiku Babudu of Kebbi, Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna, Yahaya Bello of Kogi, and Bello Matawalle of Zamfara, were also in attendance.
On Sunday, the governors had met with the National Working Committee and called for the Supreme Court’s order to be followed, urging President Muhammadu Buhari and CBN governor Godwin Emefiele to comply. The case will be heard on Wednesday.
This meeting between the Minister of Justice and APC governors highlights the ongoing tension between the Supreme Court and the CBN. The Court has made its position clear, but the CBN has so far refused to comply with the order.
It remains to be seen what the outcome of Wednesday’s hearing will be, but the meeting suggests that the APC is taking the issue seriously and is seeking to ensure that the rule of law is upheld.
