Investigation Launched into Death of 12-Year-Old Whitney Adeniran in Lagos State
The Lagos State Government has taken swift action to uncover the cause of death in the case of Whitney Adeniran, a 12-year-old student who died on February 9, 2023, News About Nigeria reports.
A coroner’s inquest has been ordered by the Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Moyosore Onigbanji, to determine the circumstances surrounding Whitney’s death.
As per the Coroners’ System Law of Lagos State 2015, a report of death must be made to the office of the Coroner if there is reasonable cause to believe that the cause of death was violent, unnatural, or suspicious. The Commissioner has assured the public that everything will be done to ensure the cause of death is known and that appropriate sanctions will be taken against anyone found culpable.
In response to Whitney’s death, the Lagos State Government has temporarily closed Chrisland School, where Whitney was a student. The closure was ordered while a full investigation is conducted into the incident.
The Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, stated that the government is aware of the impact of this tragedy on Whitney’s family, friends, and acquaintances and called for calm as the incident is thoroughly investigated.
Protests were held in front of the school on Monday, with police officers stationed around the premises. Whitney’s father, Dr. Michael Adeniran, claimed that his daughter died of electrocution, and the school management stated that Whitney slumped in public view and was rushed to the nearest medical facility for first aid.
The Lagos State Government is taking necessary steps to uncover the truth behind Whitney’s death and ensure that justice is served. The outcome of the investigation will be made public in due course.
