A meeting of the highest-ranking military officers from ECOWAS nations is underway at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, is leading the gathering of top military officials from ECOWAS nations, leveraging his position as chairman of the regional committee.
News About Nigeria reports that the high-level meeting has drawn key dignitaries, including the Defence and foreign affairs ministers, as well as the chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence.
These prominent figures have convened to discuss critical regional security matters, bringing their unique perspectives to the table.
The defence chiefs met again after their last meeting in August last year and have agreed to work together to address the situation in the Niger Republic.
Their plan includes political, security, and diplomatic approaches.
General Musa said that the defence chiefs’ presence shows their commitment to regional peace, emphasising the importance of upholding democratic values.
He also noted that sharing intelligence across the region is crucial due to the complex security situation.
The meeting’s main agenda is to activate the ECOWAS standby force to combat terrorism, following delays caused by recent political developments and coups in the region.
In attendance are the Chairman of the House Committee of Defence, a representative of the National Security Adviser, Chief of Defence Staff Christopher Musa and service chiefs, and the Chief of Defence Staff of ECOWAS countries, except Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.
On Tuesday, ECOWAS expressed concern over the ongoing protests in Nigeria, lamenting reports of violence, fatalities, and property destruction.
