LASG Clarifies: No Monthly Environmental Sanitation, Movement Restriction

The Lagos State Government (LASG) has dismissed rumours about the re-introduction of the monthly environmental sanitation and associated movement restrictions, clarifying that no such measures will be implemented by the end of July, News About Nigeria reports.

State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, issued a statement on Wednesday refuting the false information circulating on social media.

He labelled the rumours as the work of mischief-makers attempting to mislead the public.

Wahab urged residents to disregard the false reports and continue their daily activities without concern for any movement restrictions on the last Saturday of July.

He said that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s recent comments during a sanitation sensitization event at Campos Playground on Lagos Island were misrepresented.

The Governor had announced the launch of a weekly community-based sensitization and awareness exercise aimed at encouraging residents to participate in voluntary environmental cleaning.

Sanwo-Olu stressed that state officials would actively participate in these weekly activities to lead by example and promote cleanliness across communities.

“The governor mentioned that state government officials will lead from the front every week by going around to join residents in voluntarily cleaning their environment while spreading the message,” Wahab clarified.

The Commissioner reiterated that Governor Sanwo-Olu did not make any announcement about resuming the monthly sanitation exercise or imposing movement restrictions in July or any other month.

Wahab also encouraged Lagosians to adopt a continuous culture of cleanliness rather than waiting for government-mandated sanitation days.

He highlighted the importance of maintaining clean surroundings as a regular practice.

In a related message, Governor Sanwo-Olu called on residents to uphold and protect Nigeria’s democracy.

In his Democracy Day address on June 12, he reminded Lagosians of the sacrifices made by past heroes who fought for the country’s democratic path.

Sanwo-Olu urged citizens to reflect on the significance of June 12 as a symbol of unity, hope, and the pursuit of a better life through genuine democratic practices.

“As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us remember the sacrifices made by our heroes who fought for the democratic path we walk on today. Let’s join hands to protect and nurture our democracy, ensuring that their efforts were not in vain,” he said.

“June 12 symbolizes our unity, hope, and the pursuit of a better life through true democratic practices. It is a day to reflect on our progress and renew our commitment to building a brighter future for our nation.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu concluded by urging Nigerians to stand united and believe in the country’s potential for a brighter future.
