Ex-Lawmakers Lament Neglect, Tasks Tinubu To Come To Their Aid

The federal government has proposed the sum of N62,000 as the new minimum wage.

News About Nigeria reports that the amount was disclosed on Friday shortly after the Tripartite Committee for the Minimum Wage.

But organised labour has rejected the amount insisting on N245,000 as the minimum wage.

This amount was suggested after the committee was shown the minimum wage template that had previously been provided to the President on Thursday, June 6, 2024, by Minister of Finance Wale Edun.

Remember that Edun was given a one-week deadline by organised labor to submit a reasonable minimum wage offer by President Bola Tinubu

Earlier, some state governors have expressed concerns about their ability to pay a minimum wage of ₦60,000, an offer, which Organised Labour has also rejected.

Compared to the N60,000 that organised labor had earlier rejected, the amount shows an increase of N2000.

Earlier, Imo State governor and chairman of Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), Hope Uzodimma, announced that the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage was close to reaching an agreement on a new minimum wage for workers.

Speaking to journalists on Friday night during a break from the ongoing meeting of the committee in Abuja, which lasted over 12 hours, Uzodimma provided updates on the progress made so far.

Recall that on Monday, both NLC and TUC jointly declared an indefinite strike after their demands for higher minimum wage and reversal of electricity tariff hike were not met. The strike, which disrupted various sectors of the economy, including aviation and electricity, was called off on Tuesday as both parties resumed negotiations.
