Abba Kyari, the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, has been released from the Kuje Custodial Centre in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, after spending 27 months in detention.
News About Nigeria had reported that Kyari was granted bail by Judge Emeka Nwite of the FCT Federal High Court on May 22, 2024, to allow him to conclude the burial rites of his mother, Yachilla Kyari, who died on May 5, 2024.
Recall that the former deputy commissioner of police was detained following his arrest on February 14, 2022.
He was arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for his alleged involvement with an international drug cartel.
Upon arraignment, Kyari pleaded not guilty, to the allegations of the NDLEA against him.
However, despite pleading not guilty, Kyari was detained at the Kuje correctional centre and has since failed to get bail despite multiple applications by his legal team.
Kyari’s release was made known by the spokesperson of the Nigerian Correctional Service of the Federal Capital Territory Command, Adamu Duza, on Friday night.
Giving details on Kyari’s release, Duza revealed that he was released on Friday after he met his bail conditions.
Duza said, “DCP Kyari has perfected his bail conditions and has since been released today.”
He further stated that, as part of his bail conditions, Kyari was required to deposit his international passport with the court and report to the nearest NDLEA office during the bail period.
Kyari was also warned not to travel outside Nigeria during this period, as leaving the country would break the terms of his bail.
