Turkey Suspends Trade With Israel Amid Gaza Humanitarian Crisis

In response to the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Turkey has suspended all trade with Israel, News About Nigeria reports.

The Turkish trade ministry announced the decision on Thursday, citing the need for uninterrupted and sufficient humanitarian aid to Gaza as the primary motivation.

“All export and import transactions related to Israel have been stopped, covering all products,” the ministry stated.

Turkey said it is committed to implementing these measures strictly and decisively until Israel permits the uninterrupted flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Trade between Turkey and Israel amounted to nearly £5.6 billion in 2023.

However, in light of the recent restrictions, Israel’s foreign minister, Israel Katz, criticised Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, accusing him of acting against the interests of the Turkish people and disregarding international trade agreements.

Katz said that the Israeli government would explore alternatives for trade with Turkey, focusing on local manufacturing and seeking imports from other countries.

This move by Turkey follows previous restrictions on exports to Israel, initiated after Tel Aviv declined Ankara’s request to airdrop aid to Gaza’s Palestinian population last month.

President Erdogan had previously declared an end to “intense trade” with Israel, citing its aggressive stance and the worsening humanitarian situation in Palestine.

“The Israeli government continues its aggressive attitude, and the humanitarian tragedy in Palestine is worsening.

“Turkey will strictly and decisively implement the new measures until the Israeli government allows an uninterrupted and sufficient flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza,” the statement added.

The ongoing conflict has resulted in a significant loss of life, with local officials reporting over 34,000 casualties and nearly two million people displaced.
