Bodija Market, a popular marketplace in Ibadan, Oyo State, was hit by a massive fire outbreak on Tuesday night, which destroyed millions of naira worth of goods. News About Nigeria gathered that, the fire started in a section of the plank market.
As of filing this report, the cause of the fire outbreak remains unknown. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the incident and sent a team to the scene to help control the fire.
Mr Saheed Akiode, the South West Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, reassured the public that they were doing everything in their power to contain the fire. “We are there to ensure the fire is put under control. Further assessment continues tomorrow,” he said.
Local shop owners and traders have been left in shock as they count their losses, and many have taken to social media to express their grief. Bodija Market is a well-known hub for local traders and is an essential part of the community. It is hoped that efforts to rebuild and restore the market will be swift and effective.
The incident is a stark reminder of the need for proper safety measures in public places, and authorities must work to prevent such disasters from happening again.
According to an eyewitness, the fire outbreak was due to an electrical spark from one of the shops. He said,
“We battled endlessly to put out the fire but to no avail. We later sought the assistance of the state and federal services to put the situation under control.”
“As I am talking to you now, men of the fire service are still moving around with water tankers and the losses are enormous. We can’t quantify now.” He added.
