A former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian Army Properties Limited (NAPL), Major General Umaru Mohammed, has been convicted of corruption and sentenced to seven years in prison by a Nigerian Army special court-martial in Abuja.
News About Nigeria gathered that the military court also ordered Major General Mohammed to repay $2,178,900.
When converted to the Nigerian currency at an exchange rate of N1000 per dollar, the amount equals N2.1 billion.
When added to the N1.6 billion, the total sum amounts to N3.7 billion, which he is ordered to return to the Nigerian Army Properties and NAPL.
Major General Umaru Mohammed faced 18 counts of charges, including forgery, misappropriation of funds, and conspiracy, among others. Despite pleading not guilty to all the allegations, he was found guilty of 14 counts.
In the judgment delivered by the eight-man panel, led by Major General James Myam, Major General Mohammed was sentenced to five years in prison for each of the guilty counts, with the sentences running concurrently.
The court ordered him to return specific sums to NAPL, depending on the counts. The sums included $1,045,400, $480,000, $35,300, $55,500, $46,500, and $430,800, respectively.
However, the sentences are subject to the confirmation of the appropriate authorities.
An oral application to move the convicted Major General to a custodial centre, citing Section 157 of the Armed Forces Act, was denied by the court, which opted for his detention at an Army facility instead.
