Amnesty International has alleged that insurgent group Boko Haram was constantly targeting women and girls in their attacks.
Raising this alarm while condemning the recent abduction of 40 women and girls in Mafa Local government area of Borno State, the rights group said that the recent Boko Haram attack was a testament that the insurgent group was constantly targeting women and girls.
“Amnesty International condemns the abduction of over 40 women and girls by suspected Boko Haram fighters in Mafa LGA of #Borno state. The incident which took place yesterday, is yet another testimony of Boko Haram’s consistent and ruthless targeting of women and girls,” a statement by the group read.
The group further lamented that women and girls are mostly affected by the attacks by insurgents.
“The abducted women and girls are mostly affected by repeated displacement. During such raids, Boko Haram fighters round up livestock and steal valuables including money, mobile phones, jewelry and clothes,” it added.
News About Nigeria recalls that over the years Borno had been a hotspot for insurgent attacks. The National Youth Service Corp, NYSC reopened its Orientation Camp in Maiduguri, Borno state, on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, after 13 years due to Boko Haram attacks.
NYSC suggested that the move to resume orientation camping activities was an indication that peace had returned to the state.
Before now Borno state camping activities were held in other northern states for fear of insurgent attacks. However, the latest development further raises questions regarding the safety of the state against insurgents.
