The incessant collapse of the national grid is fast becoming a grave source of concern for Nigerians, as it seems the country experiences more darkness than light.
This collapse marks the second in the span of three days, the closest collapse the country has experienced, and the 11th collapse in 2024.
It should be recalled that News About Nigeria had reported that the national grid collapsed on Tuesday.
The Federal Government, however, has blamed poor maintenance and aged equipment for the recurring grid collapses.
The government claims it is working towards ending the constant collapses, adding that it has set up a panel to investigate the reasons behind them.
The chairman of the committee, Nafisatu Asabe Ali, on Wednesday, barely 24 hours after the first collapse this week said she has identified the underlying causes of the recurring national grid collapses in recent months.
She explained that, aside from poor maintenance and inadequate equipment, the high voltage of electricity surpassing the capacity of its equipment was responsible for the blackouts on October 14 and 19, 2024.
According to her, the investigative team found similar challenges affecting all stations during its probe.
The committee also listed several factors affecting the management of the grid, including vandalism of power infrastructure, the lack of free governors at power generation plants, uncoordinated maintenance schedules, and inadequate human capacity.
However, it seems Nigerians are at their wit’s end, as they continue to lament the lack of power supply and the persistent increase in the price of fuel, which has made it difficult to rely on generators.”
