Former President Muhammadu Buhari has sympathised with the flood victims in Borno State.
Buhari, who arrived in the state on Tuesday after his vacation, was welcomed by Governor Babagana Zulum, Senator Ali Ndume, and other officials.
Buhari’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu, noted in a statement that the devastating floods struck while Buhari was away.
The statement reads: “Former President Muhammadu Buhari has just landed in Maiduguri, Borno State, warmly welcomed by Governor Babagana Zulum, Senator Ali Ndume, and other political and government leaders.
“The former president was away on vacation when the state suffered the recent devastating floods, and he is here to personally commiserate with the Shehu of Borno, the government, and the people of the state.”
News About Nigeria reports that in September, nearly one million people were affected by severe flooding in Maiduguri, with at least 414,000 displaced and 30 fatalities recorded.
The flood was triggered on September 9, 2024, following the collapse of the Alau Dam in Konduga LGA. The disaster caused extensive damage to infrastructure, crops, and homes, severely affecting livelihoods across the region.
Donations to support the state’s recovery, including contributions from the Federal Government, have reportedly exceeded N17 billion.
