The Federal Government has refuted the claims making rounds that Nigerians living in Libya, are facing harassment as a result of the CAF verdict.
Recall that the Confederation of African Football (CAF), had ruled in favour of Nigeria, in the case of the AFCON Qualifiers match forfeiture.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria after mistreatment by the Libyan team, including being left stranded in an abandoned airport in Libya during the second leg of their AFCON Qualifiers, has forfeited the match and returned to the country.
CAF, after an extensive investigation, awarded the three points to the Super Eagles and fined the Libya Football Federation $50,000.
Following this, reports surfaced of the alleged harassment of Nigerians in Libya.
However, News About Nigeria reports that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement, refuted the reports, stating that Nigerians are safe in Libya.
It noted that Nigerians in Libya are going about their daily activities, devoid of any form of harassment by Libyan authorities, and described the reports of harassment as false.
It also reiterated its commitment to ensuring that Nigerians are safe, adding that I will continue to protect its citizens in Libya.
The statement reads, “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to convey that as of the time of making this statement, Nigerians in Libya are going about their daily activities, devoid of any form of harassment by Libyan authorities, following the verdict of the Confederation of African Football which indicted the Libyan Football Association for their ill-treatment of the Nigerian team and officials while in Libya for a Nations Cup Qualifying Match.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to reiterate that the well-being of Nigerian citizens anywhere in the world is a top priority of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and will continue to strive to safeguard it at all times.”
