The Nigerian Senate has summoned the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, to address the worsening state of the Old Oyo-Ogbomosho road, News About Nigeria reports.
The summons, issued on Wednesday, October 2, follows a motion raised by Senator Buhari Abdulfatai (APC-Oyo North), who expressed deep concern over the road’s deteriorating condition.
This route is an important link between southern and northern Nigeria, yet it remains in disrepair, causing hardship for travellers.
Senator Abdulfatai pointed out the dangers and delays faced by motorists, citing frequent accidents and traffic jams, especially involving heavy vehicles.
Despite federal government efforts to repair the road over the past decade, progress has stalled.
In response, the Senate directed Senator Umahi to appear before the Senate Committee on Works to explain the reasons behind the delays.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio endorsed the motion, tasking the committee to report back within three weeks.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing Nigeria’s infrastructure issues.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced that emergency repairs will soon commence on key roads, including the Lagos-Sango-Otta-Abeokuta road, which has suffered from neglect in recent years.
Through the ‘Operation Free Our Roads’ initiative, the government aims to tackle urgent road repairs nationwide.
According to Umahi’s Special Adviser on Media, Uchenna Orji, the Ministry of Works is working with concessionaires to bring relief to motorists and commuters, restoring smoother transit on vital routes.
“The road has been in a bad state for some time,” Umahi noted, “but the Federal Ministry of Works is committed to providing relief to the affected areas.”
