FCT Residents Groan Over Water Scarcity

The Federal Government has stated that it is committed to providing access to safe water for Nigerians across the country, News About Nigeria reports.

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr Joseph Utsev, disclosed this while speaking at the Inter-Ministerial Committee’s press briefing for the country’s 64th Independence Anniversary.

The Minister, in a statement issued by the Director, Information and Public Relations, Funmi Imuetinyan, stated that the Federal Government will ensure that the ongoing water projects in the country is completed, adding that this will boost food production in the country.

He noted that the water sector plays a critical role in the agenda of the Federal Government for the country.

Utsev also emphasised that the Ministry is responsible for developing policies that ensure sustainable access to safe water, addressing a range of social, cultural, environmental, and economic needs.

He listed several key achievements since his appointment, including the commissioning of the Rafin Yashin Multipurpose Dam in Niger State, the Odo-Ape Dam in Kogi State, and the Lessel Earth Dam in Benue State, and among others.

He, therefore, urged Nigerians and  investors to participate in irrigation efforts and support the commercialization of River Basin Development Authorities, as this will greatly benefit the people.

“On irrigation, he highlighted on going projects such as the Adarice Irrigation Project in Anambra and Enugu States, the Bakolori Irrigation Project in Zamfara State, Dadin Kowa irrigation project in Gombe State and the Middle Ogun Irrigation Project in Oyo State aimed at improving food production,” the statement added.
