Lagos Government Discovers Warehouse Storing Banned Styrofoam Products in Ikeja

The Lagos State Government has uncovered a warehouse in Ikeja where banned styrofoam products were being stored, possibly for sale, News About Nigeria reports.

This discovery follows an earlier ban on styrofoam and single-use plastics aimed at reducing environmental pollution in the state.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, revealed the find on Tuesday through a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.

He said that a whistleblower gave the tip-off that led to the discovery.

“Following a tip-off by a whistleblower, Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources discovered another warehouse at No 6 Ogusefunmi Street, off Nurudeen Street, Anifowoshe, Ikeja,” Wahab wrote in his post.

“The building is being used for storing the banned styrofoam packs. The operatives of the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (@LAGESCOfficial) have confiscated the packs.”

In January 2024, the Lagos State Government banned the use and distribution of styrofoam and other single-use plastics as part of its commitment to fighting plastic pollution.

The federal government also imposed a similar ban on single-use plastics in all government agencies in June of the same year.

Despite these efforts, this marks the third seizure of styrofoam products in Lagos since the ban was enforced.

Earlier this year, authorities confiscated large quantities of styrofoam from a warehouse in Mushin and another in the Idumota area of Lagos Island.

The Environment Commissioner confirmed that the seized products were transported to the Lagos State Taskforce Office for proper disposal and incineration.

“The operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) discovered a styrofoam packs warehouse in Idumota,” Wahab announced in a previous statement.

“The product has been confiscated and taken to the Taskforce Office for incineration.”
