Vice President Kashim Shettima has led a delegation from Nigeria to New York for the 79th United Nations General Assembly, News About Nigeria reports.
This was disclosed by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), Stanley Nkwocha, in a statement on Monday.
He stated that the vice president and other delegates arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, in the early hours of Monday.
The vice president was received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, and the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani.
Shettima is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement and participate in various high-level meetings as directed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The 79th session of UNGA marks a crucial milestone in the global effort to accelerate progress towards the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
It also underscores the urgent need for enhanced international cooperation, and will address pressing challenges such as climate change, poverty, and inequality while also tackling the impacts of ongoing conflicts and global health crises.
The summit further aims to reaffirm commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, and the UN Charter while at the same time, enhancing cooperation and laying the foundations for a reinvigorated multilateral system.
The summit will result in a negotiated Pact for the Future, an action-oriented document aimed to bolster global cooperation and adapt to current challenges effectively for the benefit of all and for future generations.
Others present at the summit include, the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency, Kashifu Inuwa; Nigerian diplomats, UN officials and many others.
