"It Is Fake News," Nigerian Army Debunks Chief Of Army Staff Resignation

The Nigerian Army has debunked news making the rounds on social media that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has resigned.

News About Nigeria reports that a report that emerged online on various social media platforms claimed that Lagbaja had submitted his resignation letter to President Bola Tinubu, following an alleged assassination attempt on his life.

The online report further claimed that the supposed resignation had caused confusion within the military hierarchy and the leadership of the nation as it was sudden and was coming at a time when Nigeria was still battling with insecurity and banditry.

Reacting to the viral report while speaking to Newsmen on Monday, the Director of Army Public Relations, Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu noted that it was “fake news.”

While dismissing the report, Nwachukwu noted that it was the handiwork of mischief makers who are against the efforts of the Nigerian Army in its fight against insecurity and insurgency in the country.

He further noted that the report is intended to misinform the general public and to also spike hatred against the President Bola Tinubu-led administration.

He, therefore, urged the general public to disregard the report as it is false, saying, “It is fake news; please disregard it.”

The army spokesperson urged the general public to rely only on official reports released by the leadership of the Force not on cooked up reports which are being circulated on social media.

Recall that Lt Gen Lagbaja was appointed by President Tinubu on June 19, 2023. He succeeded Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya as the 23rd Chief of Army Staff.
