Edo 2024: Actress Jemima Osunde Speaks On Election Outcome

Popular Nollywood actress Jemima Osunde has shared her fears about the state of governance in Nigeria, following the outcome of the Edo State gubernatorial elections.

News About Nigeria earlier reported that the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Monday Okpebholo was declared the winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday, having secured 291,667 votes.

His closest rival in the election, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scored 247,655, while the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Olumide Akpata, secured 22,763.

Reacting to the outcome of the election, Jemima Osunde, who is against the APC’s victory at the Saturday poll, said that the clamouring on social media and creating hashtag campaigns for a better government failed.

She also noted that even when Nigerians took the call for a better nation further by protesting on the streets, no results were seen.

The actress further stated that even though Nigerians got their voter cards and went out to vote for their preferred candidate so that their votes would count, it didn’t change anything.

She pondered on what would actually make a difference in Nigeria and make Nigeria a better place

She wrote, “-Clamoring on social media and trending hashtags. Didn’t work. – Protesting in the streets. Don’t work. – Getting voters cards and going out to vote who we want and asking for our votes to count. Didn’t work. So what will work? What are we to actually do at this point?”

Her post has sparked various reactions on X as many are suggesting possible solutions going forward.

An X user, @rujo_ wrote, “Short term: electoral reform. Long term: Constitutional change. There are more things to do but these are just the basics.”

Also, @duke Omosun wrote, “At this point only divine intervention can save us, what we have is a complete state capture by APC.”

Another X user, @JayAdediran said, “Fairness in Nigerian politics is a bedtime story for the naive. In the real world, when you’re dealing with enemies fairness is just a weapon they use to disarm you. The moment you think you’re playing by the rules, you’ve already lost.”
