NIMC: Only 1.5 Million Jigawa Residents Have National ID Cards

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has revealed that only 1.5 million people in Jigawa State have obtained their National Identification Cards, out of a population of over 6 million.

This was disclosed by NIMC’s State Coordinator, Alhaji Aminu Jakada, during a media briefing following a procession to mark International Identity Day 2024 in Dutse.

Jakada, represented by Kazaure Zonal Officer Comrade Muhammad Yusuf, said it is important to create public awareness about the National Identity Card.

He noted that the United Nations has designated September 16 each year as International Identity Day to promote the significance of identity registration globally.

“Statistically, only 1.5 million people are registered in Jigawa State, while over 4.5 million people are yet to register,” Jakada stated.

He called on residents to visit NIMC offices across the state to complete their registration and urged religious and traditional leaders, as well as other stakeholders, to encourage community members to obtain their National Identity Cards.

In a related development, News About Nigeria reported that NIMC Director General Abisoye Coker-Odusote praised the growing number of Nigerians registering for the National Identification Number (NIN).

Speaking at the sixth edition of National Day of Identity in Abuja, she noted that the number of Nigerians with NINs had increased to 110 million—a 2.39 percent rise from the 107.34 million recorded at the end of May 2024.

Coker-Odusote attributed this achievement to the strategic plan implemented by the current NIMC management.

She stated that Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) connects citizens to essential services such as social welfare, healthcare, education, and financial inclusion.

She also said that NIMC is collaborating with government agencies and private sector players to harmonise NINs with phone numbers and bank verification numbers (BVN), facilitating digital payments and other digital processes.
