The management of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has refuted reports of an inter-gang clash leading to the deaths of students on campus, News About Nigeria reports.
In a statement issued on Monday, the university’s spokesman, Dr. Sam Kpenu, clarified that the incident was a minor altercation between students and not a cult-related clash as speculated.
Kpenu was responding to an online video that claimed several students had died in a recent inter-gang fight at the university.
He clarified that no deaths or serious injuries occurred, and the situation was promptly managed by the university’s security team and the police.
“We are aware of inaccurate reports suggesting that students were killed during an incident on campus. This is not true. It was simply a fight between students, and no one was killed or injured,” Kpenu said.
He further explained that the university acted swiftly, and the students involved were apprehended and are currently being detained and questioned by the police.
Kpenu said he was disappointed over the media’s misrepresentation of the incident, stressing that the university remains committed to upholding security and professionalism on campus.
“UNIPORT has a zero-tolerance policy for cultism, bullying, and any form of violent or disruptive behavior. The campus is calm, and academic activities are proceeding as usual,” he added.
The university also confirmed that students involved in the altercation were arrested by the Rivers State Police Command for questioning.
UNIPORT’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Owunari Georgewill, personally oversaw the situation, ensuring that peace and order were restored.
Despite the false reports, UNIPORT said it is dedicated to maintaining a safe and secure environment for both staff and students.
