DSS Detention: We Will Conduct Medical Checks On Ajaero - NLC

Following the release of the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) from detention, the union has revealed plans to conduct comprehensive medical checks on him, News About Nigeria reports.

Recall that the NLC President was in the early hours of yesterday (Monday) arrested by operatives of the DSS at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on his way to an official assignment in the United Kingdom (UK).

He was, however, released in the early hours of today (Tuesday) after several calls for his release from various quarters.

Speaking in a statement after his release on Tuesday, the NLC Deputy President, Prince Adewale Adeyanju, appreciated Nigerians, civil society organisations, affiliates, and the international community for their support during Ajaero’s “illegal arrest and detention.”

While noting that proper medical checkups would be conducted on Ajaero, the NLC noted that it remains vigilant and would never be intimidated regardless of the opposition they face.

The NLC further tasked the Nigerian government to also release citizens detained for participating in the #EndBadGovernance protest and put an end to the clampdown on popular voices.

Adeyanju also lamented the current economic hardship Nigerians are suffering from due to the hike in the petrol price and food items.

He therefore called on the President Bola Tinubu-led government to reverse the cost of petrol and electricity tariffs.

The NLC also tasked the federal government to, with immediate effect, implement the newly approved 2024 National Minimum Wage Act on the grounds that Nigerians need it to be able to scale through the difficulties.
