On Monday, human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, disclosed that the Department of State Services (DSS) is yet to reveal why it arrested the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero.
Falana, the Counsel to the NLC, also clarified that Ajaero’s arrest by the DSS was not in any way connected to the earlier invitation by the Nigerian police.
News About Nigeria reported that Ajaero had earlier been invited by the police over matters related to a “threat to public peace.”
In a shocking turn of events, the NLC President was arrested by DSS operatives on Monday morning while on his way to the United Kingdom for an official assignment.
Reacting to his arrest in an interview with newsmen, Falana revealed that the police have no hand in Ajaero’s arrest as he has contacted them for clarification and confirmation.
The human rights lawyer also noted that the DSS is yet to speak or give any reason on why it arrested the NLC president.
Speaking in an interview in Abuja, Falana said, “The invitation to Comrade Joe Ajaero by the police was rescheduled last week. I have contacted the police authorities. The arrest is not related to the police invitation. Comrade Ajaero was on his way to London to attend the ongoing TUC Conference when he was arrested at the airport this morning by the SSS. No reason has been provided for the arrest by the SSS.”
Falana, therefore, called on the DSS to do the right thing by giving reasons why it arrested Ajaero without any prior warranty.
