Folashade Oluwafemiayo, a Nigerian athlete, has surpassed her previous achievement in the women’s over 86 kg para-powerlifting event, becoming the first para-athlete in history to lift 166 kg.

News About Nigeria reports that the Team Nigeria captain at the 2024 Paris Paralympics completed the country’s participation at the games by winning a gold medal in the para-powerlifting category.

Deng Xuemei from China claimed the runner-up spot with a 155 kg lift, while Egypt from Nadia Ali went home with the third-place prize with a 145 kg lift.

Oluwafemiayo’s triumph brings Nigeria’s total Paralympic medal count to seven, comprising two top honours, three second-place finishes, and two third-place awards.

Her win is coming after the Super Eagles’s AFCON qualifier match against Benin Republic.

The Super Eagles defeated their opponents 3-0 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Saturday.

Onyinyechi Mark also set a record by earning Nigeria’s inaugural gold medal after outperforming her competitors in the powerlifting finals on Friday.

Esther Nworgu secured a silver medal in the women’s 41 kg para-powerlifting event on Wednesday, adding to Nigeria’s medal haul.

Eniola Bolaji also snagged a bronze medal in the women’s singles SL3 badminton event a few days prior.

On Saturday, Flora Ugwunwa earned a silver medal for Nigeria in the women’s javelin F54 final, further adding to the country’s medal tally.

Bose Omolayo, in the Women’s 79kg Para Powerlifting category, lifted an impressive 145kg to secure the silver medal for Nigeria.

Isau Ogunkunle earned a bronze medal in the Men’s Singles Class 4 Para Table Tennis event.
