The Delta State Police Command has announced that it has facilitated the rescue of two victims who were kidnapped at their abductor’s hideout in a forest at Umunede community, Ika North East Local Government Area of the state, News About Nigeria reports.
The State Commissioner of Police, Abaniwonda Olufemi, disclosed this while speaking at a press briefing at the State Command headquarters, Asaba.
He stated that the two persons were abducted along the Asaba-Benin Expressway.
Olufemi disclosed that the rescue operation was carried out on the 31st of August 2024, after credible information was obtained concerning the arrest.
He stated that the special anti-kidnapping and cybercrime squad was directed to rescue the victims and arrest the suspects.
He, however, noted that efforts have been intensified to arrest the fleeing suspects, adding that the victims have been reunited with their families.
He stated, “On 31/08/2024, at about 0250 hours, acting on credible information relating to a kidnapping incident of two persons kidnapped on 30th August 2024 along the Asaba-Benin Expressway, I directed the Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cybercrime Squad to ensure that the victims are rescued and the suspects arrested.
“The commander’s anti-kidnapping squad led policemen in a sting operation to the Umunede forest area, where the victims were being held hostage.
“The suspected kidnappers, on noticing that the police were closing in on them, abandoned the victims and escaped.
“They were rescued and have been reunited with their families. One Dane gun and ten rounds of live cartridges were recovered. Efforts to arrest the fleeing suspects are ongoing.”
