Fuji Veteran Obesere Recovers After Life-Threatening Surgery

Fuji musician Abass Akande, popularly known as Obesere, has revealed that he recently underwent a life-threatening surgery, News About Nigeria reports.

The artist shared this information via his Instagram account on Saturday, expressing gratitude for his survival.

However, he did not provide specifics about the purpose of the surgery.

In his post, Obesere wrote, “The Almighty Allah has been merciful to me. I escaped a surgery that almost took my life but Allah said NO!”

This announcement prompted an outpouring of support and well-wishes from fans, who expressed relief at the successful outcome of the procedure and wished the musician a speedy recovery.

Obesere, known for his unique “Asakasa” style of Fuji music, has been a prominent figure in the Nigerian music industry for decades.

In a 2023 interview with Saturday Beats, the veteran artist spoke about the legacy he hopes to leave behind.

“First, my creative style of music. Also, when I’m no more, I would love people to still be talking about the way I viewed life. My life is very simple. Humility and respect are fundamental virtues of mine. Some years back, I was at 2Baba’s club on Victoria Island, and he said he had never seen or met an artiste as humble as I was. He even said I made music easier for them. That I made it look much more interesting.”

The singer has previously addressed criticisms regarding the sometimes controversial nature of his lyrics.

He defended his use of what some consider vulgar content, stating that his approach is more nuanced and “coded.”

Obesere argued that many people who publicly condemn such lyrics are hypocritical, behaving differently in private.

Throughout his career, Obesere has influenced many younger artists who have incorporated elements of his style into their music.
