The United Nigerians Against Crimes (UNAC) has vehemently denounced the Supreme Court’s recent verdict on the Kogi State election dispute, labelling it a gross miscarriage of justice and a blatant disregard for the democratic process.
According to Abdullahi Yunusa Bayawo, UNAC’s director general, the judgement is a stark example of judicial bias, marred by a glaring failure to address the fundamental issues at stake.
News About Nigeria reports that Bayawo expressed dismay at the court’s inconsistent reasoning, particularly its contradictory stance on the timing of the election and its classification of criminal cases.
Furthermore, UNAC criticised the court’s rejection of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), despite its initial endorsement, as a regressive move undermining the integrity of the electoral process.
The organisation urged the Federal Government to take swift action to reform the judiciary and prevent such travesties of justice.
Bayawo warned that the judiciary’s persistent disregard for the rule of law and democratic principles would have far-reaching consequences, including social unrest and political instability.
He called on Nigerians to reject the judgement and demand a review, while also urging civil society organisations and individuals to join UNAC in its quest for justice and accountability.
In his words, “The Supreme Court’s rejection of the use of BVAS (Bimodal Voter Accreditation System) in the election, despite its earlier directive for the Tribunal to continue with BVAS demonstration, is a clear indication of the Court’s disregard for technological advancements and its willingness to undermine the integrity of elections.
“We condemn this judgement in its entirety and urge the Federal Government to take immediate action to restructure the judiciary to prevent such miscarriages of justice.
“The continuous disregard for the rule of law and the democratic process by some judges will only lead to further instability and chaos in our country.
“We warn those judges who are bent on destroying our democracy that they will be held accountable for their actions. We urge them to remember that they are accountable to God and humanity, and their actions will have consequences.
“We urge all Nigerians to reject this judgement and demand that it be reviewed. We also call on all well-meaning individuals and organisations to join us in this fight against injustice and for a fair and just society.”
