Ex-CJN Calls For Reforms To Tackle Supreme Court Case Backlog

On Thursday, President Bola Tinubu lauded the outgone Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Olukayode Ariwoola, on the successful completion of his public service career.

News About Nigeria reported that the 22nd CJN officially retired from service on Thursday upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.

Justice Ariwoola, who was born on August 22, 1954, was appointed to the Supreme Court bench on November 22, 2011, and later became the substantive CJN on June 27, 2022, following the resignation of his predecessor, Justice Tanko Muhammad.

His appointment as CJN was formally confirmed by the Nigerian Senate on September 21, 2022.

The President’s congratulatory message was contained in a statement issued by his Special Adviser (Media & Publicity), Ajuri Ngelale.

In the statement, President Tinubu commended the eminent jurist for his services to the nation, noting his impactful leadership of the judiciary and his efforts in enriching Nigerian jurisprudence, as well as in strengthening the fibre of the law.

He further noted that Ariwoola ended his public service career on a good note as he finished well and strong.

Tinubu also noted that Ariwoola distinguished himself while serving as Chief Justice of Nigeria, adding that posterity will forever be kind to him for upholding the law at all times.

The President thanked Justice Ariwoola and wished him the very best for the future, praying that he would fulfil his days in good health.

The statement also revealed that President Tinubu will swear in Justice Ariwoola’s successor, Kekere Ekun, as the new Chief Justice of Nigeria at the State House Council Chambers tomorrow (Friday).
