Mpox: 40 Cases Confirmed In Nigeria

The Abia State Government has reported 13 suspected cases of Monkeypox in Isiala Ngwa, according to the State’s Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu.

News About Nigeria reports that of these cases, nine have tested negative, one has been confirmed positive, and three are still awaiting confirmation.

In addition to addressing the monkeypox cases, the state government has announced plans to renovate and upgrade 200 existing primary health centres across the state by the end of this year.

This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Abia State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, is set to begin in the first week of September 2024, with an expected completion date in December.

Prince Kanu, while briefing the press on the outcomes of this week’s State Executive Council meeting, emphasised the significance of this project, stating, “It is a bold step being undertaken by the Ministry, and work will commence across the state in those 200 primary health centres in the first week of September, and the delivery of those projects will be somewhere around December. All 184 wards of the state will benefit from this project. I believe that will turn out to be some form of Christmas gift to Abians.”

Additionally, Prince Kanu provided updates on the ongoing recovery of public lands that had been taken over by private individuals.

The committee responsible for this effort has begun by reclaiming land belonging to Government College Umuahia.

The government remains steadfast in its commitment to recovering all illegally acquired lands in the state, despite any resistance.

“The committee will not back out, no matter the pushback from those who may have engaged in this selfish takeover of school lands in the state,” Kanu affirmed.
