The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has scrapped the 2024 International Youth Day (IYD) celebrations to show support for the families of protesters who lost their lives during the recent #EndBadGovernance demonstrations.
News About Nigeria reports that the protests, which lasted for 10 days, were held to demand action against economic hardship but they turned violent in some areas.
The violence resulted in allegations of security operatives using live ammunition against protesters, leading to the accidental shooting of a young protester in Zaria, Kaduna State.
Speaking in a statement on Monday, Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo, NYCN president, said its decision is compelled by distress over the severe economic plight and entrenched hunger that are affecting a substantial segment of the Nigerian populace.
“The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) announces the cancellation of this year’s International Youth Day (IYD) celebrations in solidarity with the #EndBadGovernance protesters who recently lost their lives,” the statement reads.
“This decision also reflects our profound concern over the severe economic hardship and widespread hunger currently impacting millions of Nigerians.
“In light of the ongoing economic crisis—marked by rising inflation, high unemployment rates, and growing discontent among the youth—we believe it is necessary to prioritise addressing these pressing issues over celebratory events.
“We have submitted a detailed position paper to the National Security Adviser, Mal. Nuhu Ribadu; the Minister of Youth Development, Dr. Jamila Bio Ibrahim; and the National Assembly.
“This document contains recommendations to alleviate current hardships and strengthen the role of Nigerian youth in national security intelligence.”
The NYCN urged President Bola Tinubu to give serious consideration to and take immediate action on the suggestions outlined: “national youth conference, youth intervention programme, economic relief measures, transparency and accountability, public transportation, agricultural support, healthcare access, education, and skill development.”
The NYCN appealed to the president to act swiftly on these proposals, adding that decisive action will address economic challenges, restore hope, and advance the rights and welfare of Nigerian youths and citizens.
