A large number of Nigerian police officers have been deployed across key points in Abuja as the hunger protest reaches its climax today, Saturday.
News About Nigeria reports that on Friday evening, there was an increased security presence in the nation’s capital, with law enforcement agencies and other security forces on high alert.
Critical access points to the Eagle Square, Federal Secretariat, National Assembly Complex, Supreme Court, and Presidential Villa, all located within the Three Arms Zone, have been reinforced with multiple layers of security checkpoints.
Similarly, major roads leading to the MKO Abiola Stadium, initially designated as the protest venue for the #EndBadGovernance demonstrations, have been fortified with enhanced security measures to prevent any potential breaches.
This development follows the protest organisers’ vow to stage a massive one-million-man march across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, marking the culmination of the protests.
The protests, which began on August 1, have been demanding the reinstatement of fuel subsidies and other concessions from the government.
Unfortunately, the demonstrations have turned violent in several states, including Kano, Kanu, Plateau, Niger, Jigawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, and Borno, resulting in significant loss of life, injuries, and property damage.
Recall that the nationwide planned protest commenced on the 1st of August.
The protest was scheduled to run for ten days.
The committee, based at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota, Lagos, had also declared three days of mourning for those killed nationwide during the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests.
At the candlelight symposium, a member of the committee and National Spokesperson of the Youth Rights Campaign, Comrade Hassan Taiwo, emphasised the urgency of sacking the IGP, stating that more than 40 people have lost their lives nationwide.
“We are demanding the sacking of the Inspector General of Police,” he stated.
