Omoyele Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, has issued a warning to Nigerians not to be swayed by President Bola Tinubu’s planned national broadcast on Sunday.
News About Nigeria reports that this comes as the country’s hunger protests enter its third day, with no signs of abating.
The President’s media adviser, Ajuri Ngelale, announced on Saturday that the President will address the nation on Sunday, in an apparent bid to calm the growing unrest.
However, Sowore is urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and focused on their planned protest, dubbed #EndBadGovernance, which is scheduled for Monday, August 5th, 2024.
He advised people to start arriving in Abuja on Sunday, ahead of the planned invasion of Eagles Square on Monday, which is expected to be a massive outing.
Sowore believed that the president’s address was merely a tactic to dampen the momentum of the movement and discourage people from participating in the protest.
“We’ve been informed of a plan by the @officialABAT to address the “NATION” tomorrow (Sunday); the “address” is designed to chill what they know would be a massive outing for #EndBadGovernance in Nigeria on Monday, August 5th 2024,” Sowore wrote.
“Don’t fall for this trick. Keep mobilizing for EAGLE SQUARE Abuja at 7 a.m. on Monday.
“People should start arriving in Abuja tomorrow if they decide to close down roads entering Abuja. Satellite towns around Abuja are also being mobilized to engage in ACTION. #NoGoingBack #EndBadGovernace #RevolutionNow,” he posted on X.
In the northern part of the country, the protest has been marred by violence, looting, and the destruction of public and private properties.
In the south, the protest has been largely peaceful.
