Palliatives Alone Cannot Alleviate Economic Hardship – Ooni Tells FG

The Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has expressed concerns that the federal government’s distribution of palliatives to Nigerians may not effectively alleviate economic hardship.

In an interview with Channels Television, he suggested that traditional institutions should be utilised to distribute aid, as they have a more direct connection to the masses.

News About Nigeria reports that the monarch criticised the current approach, stating that government officials often hijack palliatives for personal gain and political advantage.

He said that traditional institutions, such as palaces, are more accountable and have a convergent platform to reach the people.

The Ooni urged the government to engage with the masses and address their concerns, rather than relying solely on palliatives.

He also cautioned against violent protests, which could lead to the destruction of property and harm to the very people who need support.

The monarch acknowledged the people’s right to protest but encouraged patience and dialogue.

He stated that President Bola Tinubu’s administration has also engaged with traditional rulers to address the economic challenges and has promised to implement local government reforms to bring relief to the masses.

The Ooni stressed the importance of proper engagement with the masses and utilising traditional institutions to reach the people.

He expressed optimism that the government’s willingness to work with traditional rulers could lead to more effective solutions to the economic crisis.

On July 15, Mohammed Idris, minister of information and national orientation, said the federal government has distributed 740 trucks of rice to the 36 states of the federation and the federal capital territory (FCT) to address the economic hardship in the country.

Idris said each truck contains 1,200 bags of 25 kg of rice, adding that every state would get 20 trucks.

The minister added that the rice distribution was aimed at alleviating the hardship faced by Nigerians, adding that governors were expected to ensure that the food items reach the most vulnerable in their respective states.
