The Council of South East Traditional Rulers has made a heartfelt appeal to the Federal Government to grant Nnamdi Kanu his freedom, citing the potential to significantly reduce tensions in the region.
News About Nigeria reports that Igwe Samuel Asadu, the Council’s Chairman, emphasised the importance of Kanu’s release during his appearance at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja.
Asadu highlighted the Council’s support for the growing chorus of voices calling for Kanu’s release, including the South East Governors’ Forum, lawmakers, and the broader population of the region.
He mentioned that Kanu is a son of the South East and has been detained for an extended period, despite the complexities of his legal situation.
The Chairman urged the government to exercise due diligence in ensuring that Kanu’s release does not lead to unintended consequences, suggesting that certain measures or agreements should be put in place.
He expressed the Council’s confidence that Kanu’s freedom would bring a sense of calm and joy to the people of the region.
Asadu also shared the personal perspective of traditional rulers, stating that they pray daily for Kanu’s release and empathise with the pain and suffering of his family.
He described a potential presidential pardon as a gift, promising that the Council would express their gratitude in a significant way.
In recent months, there have been growing calls for Kanu’s release, particularly from stakeholders in the south-east region
The south-east region has witnessed an uptick in the activities of gunmen who violently enforce a sit-at-home order on Mondays to demand Kanu’s release.
